resonance string quartet - jay chengJay juggles an active schedule of business, private violin teaching and performing. He performs regularly with re: mix, Singapore’s “crack string ensemble”, and was Manager of Resonance Quartet from 2010 to 2011.

While studying at the National University of Singapore, Jay performed with the NUS Symphony Orchestra (NUSSO) as a first violinist, both locally and overseas. In the 2005 Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF) held in Aberdeen, Scotland, Jay performed with the NUSSO, AIYF Orchestra, and participated in the chamber music competition as a string quartet, while backpacking across Scotland.

Jay’s varied performing experience has seen him contribute to notable productions such as Singapore Lyric Theatre’s The Merry Widow in 2004the Yellow River Cantata featuring a 300-strong choir in 2005; The Malhaar Concerto featuring Indian classical music to open the Singapore International Water Policy Dialogue in 2009; Dance Ensemble Singapore’s Butterfly Dreams in 2010; and Singapore Lyric Opera’s “20 Years of Grand Opera” in 2010. In addition to yearly concerts and engagements, his participation in re: mix also saw him perform alongside Taiwanese super band Mayday 五月天 for their concert at the National Stadium, Singapore in April 2010 and at the JB Arts Festival in July 2011.

Under the guidance of Mr. Foo Say Ming (violinist, Singapore Symphony Orchestra; music director, re: mix), Jay was awarded the Diploma in Violin Performance from the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music (DipABRSM). August 2010 saw Jay travel to Vienna for the Euro Music Festival to study with Mr. Isaac Malkin (faculty member, Manhattan School of Music), and solo travelling across Austria.
